FOREWORD

Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited is a central public sector
enterprise that is well known in the country as the unique financial institution that has
delivered “profitability with social justice”. In its 50 years long journey has remained
true to its commitment to the cause of affordable housing for the poor and Economically
Weaker Section (EWS) households without compromising the financial bottom line of
the organization. HUDCO has played an important role in shaping the present urban
landscape of India. It is noteworthy, that HUDCO’s contribution in doing so is not limited
to financing prestigious and pioneering projects across length and breadth of India but

equally important, if not more, has been its impact as a consultant in ‘designing’ the built
form in Indian cities. Since its inception in 1970, the team of architects, engineers and
planners in HUDCO believed in the role and relevance of design for a sustainable habitat,
communities and quality of life. The same was the institutional conviction which was put in
practice by providing design support and capacity building to its clients who sought financial
assistance for project implementation. One of HUDCO’s pioneering intervention has been to introduce innovative design as well
as cost effective and energy efficient building material and technology in housing that had the dual benefit of reducing the cost of
construction and the long term environmental impact of lower energy usage and carbon footprints. Over the years, HUDCO has
diversified its role as a design consultant and have its footprint in almost all states in India. Preparation of master plan for cities
with diverse functional character and socio-economic challenges to heritage led development and conservation, planning for

World Heritage Sites, institutional buildings of national importance to tourism destination plan and design of tourism infrastructure
and amenities, from environmental impact assessment to solid waste management – there is hardly any dimension of sustainable
urban development wherein HUDCO has not ventured and made an impact. Infact, it is pertinent to mention here, two of the most
successful projects in India demonstrating ‘land as a resource’ concept was implemented by HUDCO. The August Kranti Bhawan
Complex and the Andrews Ganj project are the successful initiatives that also stand tall as a phenomenal work of urban design
        and architectural landmark.

Not just its spatial outreach, the scale of diversity of the projects handled is a testimony of HUDCO’s capabilities and leadership

qualities, which has grown from strength to strength over the last few decades. The achievements of HUDCO has also been
honored with awards and appreciation both at national and international level. This book provides a snapshot view of the road
travelled by HUDCO Consultancy and its impact in shaping the urban landscape in India. It is also an expression of commitment
and willingness to carry forward the good work done by HUDCO in collaboration and with support with its business partners and
all stakeholders for sustainable urban development.
