PREFACE

Urbanization is an important aspect to the development of any nation. As one of the
fastest growing economies in the world, India has laid a great emphasis on creation
of affordable housing and good quality urban Iving spaces. Presently, India is facing
a new set of challenges that call for responsible and prudent initiatives, so that
the growth opportunities can be maximized while balancing sensitive and sustainable
development concerns. It is imperative to build the resilience of our cities to climate
change, pandemics and disasters bringing into greater focus on provision of affordable
housing, earthquake/cyclone resistant structures and adequate infrastructure.
Sensitive and innovative design can play a major role in creating a high-quality living
environment, while addressing the host of challenges in urban development through
planning and design of urban spaces. Thus, ‘creativity’ will always remain central
driving tool to find solutions to these issues. Keeping this in view, HUDCO had constituted “HUDCO Design
Awards” for the first time in 2012. The objectives of the awards are:-
To encourage professionals to be more creative and provide out of the box solutions.

• To use creative design for improving the living environments of our cities.
• To document/show case the best practices and possibility of replication.

• To sensitise decision makers regarding the utility and applicability of innovative designs.
Five categories in HUDCO Design Awards are ‘Cost Effective Rural/Urban Housing deploying Innovative / Emerging
& Disaster Resistant Technology, New & Innovative Design Solutions for Towns & Cities, Conservation of Heritage,
Green Buildings, Landscape Planning & Design’.
This year’s HUDCO Design awards received an excellent response from all over the country. The entries were
evaluated by an experienced and professional Jury, and the award entries were selected based on creativity,
innovation, and sensitivity in design. Understanding that learning from each other is a key input in the strategy
for sustainable development, initiative has been taken to bring out the publication titled “HUDCO Design Awards
2023-24” that showcases all the award-winning projects. HUDCO, through this publication aims to reach out to
people, architects, engineers, urban planners, allied professionals, and decision makers to inspire them to look
for innovative and new ideas to address the upcoming challenges.

It is our pleasure to acknowledge the inspiration and guidance provided at every stage by our CMD Shri Sanjay
Kulshrestha despite his busy schedule. I also acknowledge the efforts of Consultancy Services Wing in particular,
and the support received from Regional offices, the staff of PR Wing, Administration Wing, IT wing and Finance
Wing in bringing out the ‘HUDCO Design Awards 2023-24’ publication. Last but not the least, I congratulate all
the awardees without whom this publication would not have been possible.
