HRRL TOWNSHIP AT BARMER, RAJASTHAN
Site Context A self-sufficient township for the employees of
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited is being
developed in the interiors of the Thar Desert.
Adjacent to an upcoming oil refinery of HPCL, the
region is known for its harsh climate.
The form and layout of the Township seeks inspiration
from Johad (an oasis)- ‘an isolated area of desert
vegetation, typically surrounding a water source which
provides a protected habitat for flora and fauna
including humans’. The planning for the project looks
inward, accommodating a dense buffer throughout the
periphery. A string of water stream ties the far ends
of the Township, meandering in the midst of the
landscape, and eventually culminating into a Central
Lake on one end and into a Central Oasis Park on the
other.
