Conservation of Birsingha Bhagabati Vidyalaya, West Bengal
Birsingha village is the birthplace of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a pioneer of the Bengal renaissance and an important
symbol of the liberated Bengali culture. Located around 100kms away from Kolkata, Birsingha village is situated a few miles
away from the river. An idyllic rural Bengal village in a fertile landscape, this place epitomizes rural Bengal life, architecture and
society. The site (marked in red) lies in the centre of the village, on the main throughfare of access from the main highway.
This project is a demonstration of how to effectively engage with places of historical significance – creating value-addition
through responsible conservation; exemplified through intervention in a heritage precinct with local vernacular architectural
buildings more than 150 years old.
