BACKGROUND
By employing innovative design solutions, construction techniques
and materials, transformation of this old concrete house into a
flood-resistant dwelling was achieved. The repurposing of this house
reflected not only resilience but also a commitment to environmental
stewardship in the face of adversity. In the area of Eloor, this
project serves as a beacon of hope for residents grappling with the
persistent threat of flooding in the region. The project underscores
the importance of community-driven efforts and sustainable practices
in mitigating the impact of natural disasters. This also inspired others
to embrace eco-friendly solutions in building resilient communities.
KEY FEATURES OF THE HOUSE:
1. Idea of room for river: the typology as on stilt
2. Idea of junk walls: we need not start from scratch, starting from
context is what is vernacular means
3. Spatial hierarchy in levels. Ground levels for flood and social
spaces extended in the house
4. Technological hierarchy: stilt, junk wall, bamboo reinforced mud
wall and CSEB Blocks.
5. Mud texture as the natural finish, recycled wood and oxide flooring
The total area of 3000 sqft took Rupees 35 lakhs only without
compromising on any spatial requirement. The house holds luxurious
living and dining along with a stilt area which acts like an anchor
for the social activities contained by a dwelling unit. The entire wall
materials are upcycled from the existing house in the site and the top
layer wall materials are bamboo reinforced mud. Hence 80% of the
structural systems are vernacular and upcycled.
“Sustainability is about ensuring material sustainability, through
incorporating social aspects , converging with the prosperity and
possibilities of disaster nature has in store”.
