A MODEL FOR DESIGNING HOUSING IN FLOOD PRONE AREA
MASS HOUSING SCHEMES - A QUESTION OF IDENTITY
A house of one’s own is the ultimate dream for many. The aspirations linked to this desire have no socio economic pattern per say.
It goes without saying that every homeowner wants their house to have an identity of its own. But in Mass housing schemes,
especially when it comes as a rebuild process post a natural disaster, reasons such as cost, time etc. provide no option for
such customization.

BREAKING A HOUSE INTO 3 WALLS
The key concept of the scheme is breaking the house into 3 walls.
A BLANK WALL - A WINDOW WALL - A DOOR WALL
The wall dimension is standardized to 270cm (L) x 240cm (H) and made of GP tubes for structural frames. The framing is done
using 40mm thick GP square tube and inside members with 25mm square tubes. The main reinforcement is 2”x2” square weld
mesh and on both sides of it, chicken mesh is tied on, the entire width of the frame (40mm) is then filled with cement plaster
(CM1:5), making it a monolithic ferro cement wall.
