AFTER DISASTER (2013) MASTERPLAN PHASE 1 COMPLETED (2021) OVERALL MASTERPLAN VISION
13 ACRES OF SETTLEMENT
Devastation caused in 2013 and the Kedarnath Redevelopment Masterplan
FIRST IGBC PLATINUM RATED HILL-TOWN DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Kedarpuri, at an elevation of 3553m (11,600 feet), in the Himalayas, was devastated by unprecedented flooding in 2013,
that wiped out most of the town but the main temple. This ecologically sensitive area witnessed perilous imbalances after being
plagued by haphazard & unchecked construction driven by a burgeoning tourism economy.
In close coordination with the Prime Minister’s office, the Uttarakhand State government, and various public sector units
(PSUs) and corporate entities, the INI Design Studio team formulated a comprehensive strategy, incorporating novel and
forward-thinking approaches, to resurrect Kedarpuri with an aim to ensure its enduring vitality and re-imagine this spiritual
town’s redevelopment through responsible stewardship, while addressing concerns that include the environment, social fabric,
ecology, & resilience.
Adopting a holistic approach, the redevelopment initiative encompassed the master planning of Kedarpuri (23 Acres), specific
projects and their engineering & structures within the hill town, as well as projects on the route from Sonprayag to Kedarpuri.
This entailed feasibility assessments, program development, master planning, architecture, and infrastructure design, with a
focus not only on physical revitalization but also on nurturing the spiritual and communal essence in an environmentally sustainable
manner. The project embraced innovative solutions tailored for spiritual hill towns, epitomizing a progressive outlook towards
urban development, and catering to the evolving needs of the community.
The successful implementation of the masterplan earned it India’s first Platinum Rated Hill Town Habitat recognition from
the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), underscoring the plan’s holistic ethos, that interweaves heritage preservation,
sustainability, and contemporary responsible interventions.
