HEALTH STATISTICS THE WISDOM OF THE AGED
Age is not merely a biological function of the number or the years one has
lived. It is also a product of social norms and expectations. In our youth-
driven culture, growing old is generally viewed as undesirable. Our built
environment showcases the emphasis on youth. Therefore, the architecture
DIABETES environment in the present scenario is youth-centric. Within a youth-driven
community, quickness and efficiency are the key factors. One has a strong
desire to remain youthful, which results in older adults being in denial of their
HYPERTENSION deteriorating health.
1. Entering the old age, young old (55 – 65 yrs.) –
ARTHRITIS This group is active in monetary activities. They prefer to remain independent
and are deeply involved in their career. This group is generally less active
towards creating a social life. As this group has just entered the old age, they
CANCER are emotionally unstable.
2. Transitional face, middle old (65 – 75 yrs.) –
ASTHMA This group is in transition and is stuck between healthy, active life and frailty.
They start looking forward to part-time jobs in order to remain independent.
They are in an age where they have time and therefore, try to utilize it by
HEART PROBLEM exploring their surroundings and interacting in society.
3. Frail older people, old old (75+ yrs.) –
GASTRIC PROBLEM This group is in the emotionally weaker section, and are largely family
dependent. They look forward to interacting within the society, to stay active.
This group is also emotionally dependent on their grandchildren. In this age
EYE PROBLEM group, physical dependency is common.
The survey was conducted in 10 number market and
Ananddham an old age home in bhopal.
PARALYSIS Q: Will you wish to shift to a senior citizens’ habitat ?
55- 65: The Young-Old.
Survey inferred that the young-old wouldn’t choose the Habitat as they are
DEPRESSION affectionate towards their job and family. They tend to believe that it is a place
for the helpless and hesitate to think about a future without their family. They
are independent and don’t rely on others for physical or monetary aid.
CHEST PAIN 65- 75: The Middle-Old.
This age group faces a period of vacantness for the senior citizens. The
absence of jobs has left plenty of spare time. The survey concludes that their
HEADACHE need to enjoy life will attract them to a habitat that offers various activities
and increased interaction.
75+: The Old-Old.
Survey deduced that this group will want to shift to a habitat that provides a
BODY PAIN platform to share their opinions and interact. Physical dependency demands
extensive care which can be provided by hospitals, nursing homes, and Senior
Citizens’ Habitat. According to this age group, they would prefer a Senior
OTHER Citizens’ Habitat over the other two.
